On the occasion of the VII World Meeting of Families with the Pope, the famous theater La Scala in Milan will offer a concert in honor of the Holy Father on the evening of Friday, June 1st. It will be a cultural occasion to speak to the world and families; to repeat in music the theme of the seventh meeting.

The Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Scola noted: "Music is perhaps one of the most important elements of a celebration: there is no real party without music, without men and women mixing with melodies and songs that are capable of expressing their joys and melancholy, their hopes and sorrows."

La Scala will be the third public meeting for Benedict XVI, who, after arriving at Linate airport and the greeting the city from Piazza del Duomo, for the first time to attend a concert in the theater as Pope.

The Pontiff, whose passion for music is well known, will arrive in what is universally recognized as the "Temple of Opera" at 19.30 in the “Popemobile” and will be welcomed at the entrance of the theater by the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, and Stéphane Lissner, superintendent and artistic director of La Scala. After the welcome, the Pope will attend the concert in his honor sitting in the audience.

Doing the honors will be maestro Daniel Barenboim, musical director of La Scala. He will conduct Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The concert will last a little more than one hour and there will be no intermission.

At the conclusion of the concert, Benedict XVI will take the floor and, before leaving the theater, will address a greeting to the workers. The event will end around 21.10 and only delegates from the bishops conferences of the world and civil authorities will be attending the concert at La Scala in Milan. The pilgrims will follow the concert from the Piazza del Duomo, where a giant screen will be set up.

The concert will be televised by: RAI 3, Telenova (DTT channel 14 of Lombardy, and via satellite on channel 830 on Sky and on channel 60 of TV sat), TV 2000 and Telepace.
