“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14: 1/6)

Among the events at the Last Supper as recounted by John, there is the explicit announcement of the betrayal of Judas and his going out into the night.  From here follow the manifestations of Jesus about His glory, His ascension to the Father, His new commandment.  All of this obviously troubles the soul of the disciples who are unable to enter fully into the promises of Jesus.  He lovingly invites them to not be troubled, to immerse themselves in faith in Him and in God, His Father.  He tells them that in His Father’s house there are many dwelling places and room for each of them.

But how can we get there?  Thomas’ dilemma is often ours as well.  We want to follow our own ways, the ones we know, without too many obstacles and unforeseen happenings.  Instead, Jesus’ invitation is different.  He is the Way and it passes through the Cross.  He is also Truth, His every word, teaching, commandment that embraces all with His ‘love everyone as I have loved you’.  He is also the Life, given for us, given to us, lived eternally with Him in the dwelling of the Father.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will relish the thought of being with Jesus in the dwelling place of the Father and I will remember that it is worth any price to be with Him for all eternity.
