“Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.” (Mark 10:43)

Jesus tells His apostles, ‘I am among you as one who serves’. But, who is Jesus?

He is the Wisdom of the Most High God. He is the Omnipotent Son of the Father, God from God, generated by Him, consubstantial with Him. Jesus is the incarnation of the second Person of God, One and Three. He took our human nature upon Himself in order to live and experience the depths of our life in this world.

Centering in on this, reflecting upon it means grasping to some degree the weight and the power of today’s Word. He wished to be among us with great authority, but in an attitude of service. Then, it is clear that true greatness must be shown in service to each person, women, men, the elderly, and children. In this way joy and peace will flourish and egoism will disappear. All those who exercise positions of authority in religious, civil, social life must transform this power into loving service. Otherwise, it becomes despotic, destroying self and everyone else.
